Persephone and Hades

Description

Persephone...
Daughter of Demeter and Zeus, Persephone was lured by a blue narcissus & abducted (& in some lore, raped) by Hades, God of the Underworld. It is said that greifstricken, Demeter stopped letting things grow on Earth and plants and animals started to die, that was, until Zeus commanded Hades to let her return to the surface world.
She didn't return to her mother until after Hades had tricked her into eating a small handful of seeds from a pomegranate--four to be exact--and now, according to the mythology, Persephone returns to the underworld for four months out of the year, and that is how we got the winter season.
Greek mythology is a recurring theme in my artwork as of late--I've created Medusa, Poseidon, and now Persephone and Hades. I really enjoy the story telling that is involved in illustrating their characters. In this one, however, I wanted to put a twist on the stereotypical story.
Mythology is a funny thing--there's never any absolute story, there are always little details in the cracks that get changed across translations. In researching the information I needed for this painting I came across four or five separate groups of flowers that Persephone is said to have been frolicking in as she was abducted. The general consensus, however, was that she was to be depicted as trapped and unhappy in the Underworld. I wanted to depict her trapped between both sides--with an unsure demeanor, but still as something beautiful. She's trapped within Hades's grasp and at the same time, wrapped up in vines created by Demeter, her mother.
I can only hope that she found her own happiness.
